The Russian hockey player will have an "honorary retinue" when he gets close to the NHL's main record.

National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman and former hockey player Wayne Gretzky will accompany Alexander Ovechkin when he is four goals away from the NHL scoring record.

This was reported by “ Championship ” with reference to an interview given by Bettman himself to journalist Tariq El-Bashir.

Bettman said that he and Gretzky will be there when the Russian hockey player manages to set a new NHL record.

They will be present at all of Ovechkin's games when he scores his 890th goal.

Gretzky, 63, still holds the NHL's all-time sniper record. The Canadian has scored 894 goals in his career.

Ovechkin has 868 of them so far. But now the athlete is not going out on the ice due to an injury. The 39-year-old Russian is recovering from a fractured fibula.

The hockey player still has to score 22 goals before Bettman and Gretzky can start following him. And there are still 27 goals left to go before the new record is reached.
