Young man gives up life in the US to spend $31,000 on an island in Finland.

He said it was a good purchase because it was less than the deposit on the house.

In California, the down payment on a house is as high as 20%, or about $167,000, Mail Online reports.

He thinks buying a remote two-and-a-half-acre island for just $31,000 is a good idea.

The man added that he was coming to the island with his girlfriend to build a summer house there.

The couple built a frame out of logs and laid down decking purchased from a hardware store.

The young man also added that they built a toilet and shower so that they could wash themselves while on the island.

The couple plans to initially build a comfortable base camp on the island.

They want to start large-scale construction next year.

The students plan to build a log house and develop a small plot of land.
