Finnish airports switch to 1960s navigation due to GPS interference

Finnish airports have been forced to abandon modern technology and start using outdated navigation methods.

Two airports in Eastern Finland, which are located near the Russian border, have taken such measures.

Due to GPS interference, airport authorities have decided to switch to a radio navigation system that was used in the 1960s, Yle reports.

Now they use an omnidirectional rangefinder (RDF) beacon, which is long outdated.

Joensuu and Savonlinna airports have taken similar measures since September 2024.

A similar measure is also planned to be introduced at Lappeenranta Airport.

Prior to this, a number of airlines in European countries (Finland, Estonia, Poland, etc.) reported interference with GPS.

The reason they cited was that Russia was jamming GPS signals due to drone attacks.
