A 45-year-old father of many children from the United States may have faked his death and fled abroad.
The man went missing on August 12 after going to Green Lake in Wisconsin.
Before disappearing, he told his wife that he was returning from a kayak, CNN emphasizes.
Rescuers found an overturned kayak and Borgwardt's personal belongings, but there was no trace of the man himself. The search continued for more than two months, using drones and divers, but to no avail.
An unexpected development occurred in October when it emerged that the missing man had been checked in Canada.
The police learned that the father of three had also been corresponding with a woman from Uzbekistan.
Based on this information, investigators believe that the American may have fled to Europe.
Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll has called on the man to come forward to settle matters. Authorities will decide what charges Borgwardt may face.
