The Chinese Consul General was expelled from the United States due to a scandal with an official.

Huang Ping left New York on orders from the US state authorities.

The reason was the charges against Linda Sun by the US Department of Justice, CNN reports. She previously worked as a civil servant in New York State.

She was accused of acting as an unregistered agent of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Sun was detained and arrested. American law enforcement also became interested in her husband's activities.

He is suspected of conspiracy to commit money laundering and banking fraud.

Sun, according to authorities, secretly acted in the interests of China while working in the administrative apparatus of the state of New York.

The consul general, meanwhile, was stripped of his powers and expelled from the United States amid the proceedings with Sun.

"He no longer represents the [Chinese] mission in New York," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

However, the State Department later denied CNN's statement. They said that the consul general was not expelled. He simply completed his scheduled mission, so he left the United States and returned to China.
