Hundreds of prisoners were freed when Bangladeshi protesters stormed the prison.
Protests continue in the South Asian state, with 64 people already killed.
Protesters stormed the prison, which is located 40 km from the capital of Bangladesh, AFP reports.
The authorities cannot yet name the exact number of prisoners released. But they have no doubt that we are talking about "hundreds" of criminals.
Against this backdrop, clashes between protesters and police and special forces continue.
Protests in Bangladesh
The country's authorities have been unable to quell the protests for several weeks. The population is dissatisfied with the quota system for government positions.
Bangladesh has a law that reserves up to 30% of civil service positions for family members of veterans who fought in the war of independence from Pakistan between March and December 1971.
A new generation of Bangladeshis believes the law is not only outdated but also discriminatory. Many of the protesters are students.
