At least 129 people killed after Congo prison break

New details have emerged about the attempted prison escape in Congo.

At least 129 people died in the incident.

This information was confirmed by the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Security, Jacquesmain Shabani, who wrote about the incident on his account on the social network X.

Shabani noted that the preliminary number of victims is 129. Of these, 24 people died from gunshot wounds after fire opened by law enforcement officers.

The remaining victims died as a result of strangulation or crushing.

Shabani also shared statistics on the victims. According to preliminary data, at least 59 people were injured in the incident. He also separately noted that cases of violence against women were recorded.

The escape resulted in fires that destroyed several administrative buildings.

The Minister of the Interior of the Democratic Republic of Congo expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims and noted that the government is satisfied that the situation is under control.
