The man spent ten years behind bars on false charges and managed to secure multi-million dollar compensation.
American Ryan Ferguson lost part of his life in prison, where he ended up on charges of a crime he did not commit.
In 1993, he was sent to prison for 10 years for allegedly killing a newspaper editor, ABC 17 reports.
After his release, the man could not come to terms with the fact that he had become a victim of the “system” and a traitorous friend who had given false testimony against him in court.
Years of investigation have shown that Ferguson did not commit the crime and spent 10 years in prison only because his friend was the key witness.
He was found not guilty in 2013. It was then revealed that the prosecutor's office had concealed evidence prepared by his lawyers.
It wasn't possible to get compensation right away either. But in the end, it only increased the final amount.
The defendant in this story is an insurance company that should have covered the legal costs and paid compensation several years ago, but failed to do so.
As a result, the amount grew and reached $38 million (RUB 3.7 billion).
