An American woman waited 16 years for the death penalty, but was suddenly acquitted.

Melissa Lucio, 55, has escaped capital punishment in the US state of Texas.

The woman was sentenced to death 16 years ago, the Washington Post writes.

She received this punishment after allegedly killing her 2-year-old daughter.

The investigation established that Melissa had been beating the girl for some time and eventually inflicted severe injuries on her, from which the child never recovered.

But now the case has been reviewed and a number of violations have been revealed.

Firstly, the case was built on false accusations. Only now has it been revealed that the investigators used the testimony of everyone who was ready to slander the woman.

Secondly, an examination was conducted, but pseudoscientific methods were used for it. The results of the laboratory study were declared invalid.

The defense has solid evidence that Melissa is innocent.

After 16 years in prison and awaiting death, she will be released if the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals so decides.

She can also get a solid compensation, which will amount to millions of dollars. Similar stories have already happened in the US many times.

For reference

Texas is a state in the southern United States, ranking second in territory after Alaska.
