A herring king has been discovered off the coast of California, and its appearance on the surface promises cataclysms.
Kayakers found a 3.6 m long fish near the city of San Diego, which is located on the Pacific Ocean coast.
Among those who discovered the dead herring king were oceanographers, writes the Sfgate portal. They decided to pull the fish ashore and take it to the university for further study.
It took the combined efforts of several people to load it into the car.
The Americans did not find the largest specimen. The length of the herring kings reaches 11 m. This is confirmed data. But there are rumors of 15-meter specimens.
These fish spend most of their lives in the depths of the ocean. They almost never appear on the surface.
Attention to the herring kings increased after the devastating earthquake in Japan in 2011.
Then, about 20 such fish were washed up on the beaches by the waves. This happened shortly before the earthquake that damaged the nuclear power plant.
Oarfish kings were also spotted before the powerful earthquake in Chile in 2010.
Such incidents have given the fish a reputation as "predictors of disasters." But scientists have not confirmed a link between herring kings and earthquakes.
