The Jivitputrika festival in India has left dozens dead.
During the so-called "sacred bath" 43 people drowned.
RIA Novosti reported the incident, citing information received from representatives of the government of the Indian state of Bihar.
It is noted that drowning cases have been recorded in 15 counties of the state. Of the 43 deaths so far, 37 victims are children.
Three more people are still missing.
The families of the victims will receive payments of 400,000 rupees, which is equivalent to $4,700.
According to statistics, this festival takes lives every year. In 2023, 22 people, including 15 children, drowned during the celebration of Jivitputrika.
The festival in question is an ancient Hindu festival that is widely celebrated in several Indian states.
Women fast and abstain from drinking water during the Jivitputrika, then take religious baths in local water bodies. Children are often present at the event, and are given flower garlands at the end of the festival.
