Sooner or later, anyone could find one of these ships, Monteiro said.
The scientist said Portugal could not ensure the protection of such a find from treasure hunters.
Monteiro also said that there may be a ship that sank off the coast of the Troia Peninsula in 1589, which was carrying about 22 tons of gold and silver.
