Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the holy martyr Julian of Tarsus.
People call this celebration Ulyanovsk Day.
In Rus', on this day it was customary to participate in various rituals which, according to ancient beliefs, could strengthen family ties.
In addition, it was considered indecent to engage in verbal battles with close relatives.
The Great Martyr Julian of Tarsus lived at the turn of the 3rd-4th centuries after the birth of Christ. He was the son of wealthy people, his father was a pagan, his mother was a Christian.
It was his mother who instilled in Julian a love for Orthodox beliefs.
However, the future saint lived at a time when the cruel emperor and hater of Christians, Diocletian, ruled.
Despite the ruler's cruel policies, Julian continued to adhere to Christian dogmas. In addition, he accepted baptism.
One day the preacher was captured and they tried to persuade him to renounce the Christian religion, but he was firm in his convictions.
Then the pagans put Julian in a bag with snakes and threw him into the sea, where he drowned.
The remains of the saint were discovered by a Christian woman. The preacher was buried with honors, and his relics became healing.
What you can't do on Ulyanovsk Day
On this day, many people followed certain rules:
- did not follow any omens or perform any non-Christian rituals;
- did not quarrel or separate from relatives;
- They didn't make people wait, especially close ones.
It was on July 4 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to refuse alms to those in need. Otherwise, according to beliefs, a period of significant deprivation and poverty, as well as failures in personal life, would come.
What can you do on Ulyanovsk Day?
Today it is recommended to start harvesting linden blossom. It was believed that linden flowers can cure diseases.
It is also worth preparing a good dinner and treating your loved ones to it.
