Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the Great Martyr Margaret (Marina) of Antioch.

People call this celebration Marina Lazorevaya.

In Rus', on this day it was customary to expect the onset of a period of thunderstorms and showers.

For the same reason, all gardening work should be postponed to other days.

The Great Martyr Margaret of Antioch was the daughter of a pagan priest of Edessa and was born in the 3rd century AD.

Margaret was born in Antioch of Pisidia, which is why she later received the nickname Antiochian.

Margarita was raised and educated by a Christian nurse, who instilled in the girl a love for Orthodox beliefs and teachings.

The future saint was so imbued with Christianity that she secretly accepted baptism and hid her passion for many years.

However, when Margarita, who was baptized with the name Marina, turned 15, her father learned of her actions and disowned her, throwing her out of the house.

Marina was subsequently executed by the local ruler, who, captivated by her beauty, first tried to persuade her to renounce Christ, but the believer did not do so.
