Today, November 13, Orthodox believers remember Saints Spyridon and Nicodemus, who were considered protectors from fires.
Everyone else celebrates the fishermen's holiday, and men often go fishing.
On this day, folk traditions and beliefs will suggest signs that help to recognize the weather and luck for the future.
On this day, it is customary to closely monitor the night sky and weather signs.
If there are many bright stars visible in the sky, then the winter will be calm, without mud and severe frosts.
There were also other observations that were used to determine changes in the weather:
- if there is a wind blowing during the day, then a cold snap is expected soon;
- if there is fog outside, it means it will get warmer in a week;
- the singing of bullfinches foreshadowed the coming winter;
- the loud chirping of sparrows foreshadowed good weather;
- If a bear makes a den on a hill, then a flood can be expected in the spring;
- How many birds you see in the sky on this day, so much good news will arrive soon.
What else can you do on this day?
November 13 was considered a lucky day for preparing traditional chicken dishes.
It was also common to catch fish in order to bake a pie out of it.
Getting married or engaged on this day was considered a good omen.
