Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of Bishop Eusebius of Samosata.
Popularly this celebration is called Evseyev Day.
In Rus', on this day it was customary to refrain from going to the bathhouse and from other various ablutions.
In addition, one should not go on a journey or start new business before midday.
Hieromartyr Eusebius was the Bishop of Samosata. He was born at the end of the 3rd century AD.
Eusebius was a very ardent Christian who preached Orthodoxy without fear of reprisals from idolaters.
According to various sacred books, the bishop lived during the reign of Julian the Apostate. Dressed as a soldier, Eusebius crossed Phoenicia, Palestine and Syria, preaching the teachings of Christ.
The bishop preached, spreading the Orthodox faith, and also spoke about the exploits and sacrifice of the Son of the Most High.
Eusebius died after a woman dropped a roof tile on his head during one of his religious journeys.
Despite his imminent death at the hands of a pagan, the preacher asked the Christians who were trying to save his life not to kill her or cause her any harm.
What you shouldn't do on Evseev Day
On this day, many people followed certain rules:
- did not part with loved ones, especially for a long time;
- did not go on any long journey;
- did not quarrel with relatives and generally did not enter into debates with them.
It was on July 5 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to hunt animals. Otherwise, according to beliefs, a period of significant deprivation and poverty, as well as failures in personal life, would come.
What can you do on Evseev Day?
Today it is recommended to start the day with a prayer to the Higher Powers. In particular, it is worth visiting the church.
It is also worth asking the Almighty for help in matters concerning family and harvest.
