Evdokimov Day: What Can and Cannot Be Done on This Holiday – Note for Orthodox Christians

Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the patron saint of the family hearth, Eudocimus the Cappadocian.

People call this celebration Evdokimov Day.

In Rus', on this day it was customary to eat tasty and high-calorie dishes before the upcoming fast.

Saint Eudocimus the Cappadocian was born and lived in the 9th century AD. While still a teenager, he decided to devote himself entirely to God.

At the same age, the future saint swore that from now on he would wear the crown of celibacy for the rest of his life.

Thus, in particular, Evdokim never spoke to a single woman in his entire life. The only exception in this regard was his mother.

The saint dedicated his entire life to caring for the poor. He also helped the disadvantaged and orphans.

Eudocimus was a very kind man. For this reason, in his youth, Emperor Theophilus showed him mercy and respect and appointed him governor of the Kharsian region.

Evdokim lived a long and peaceful life. He died in his old age in his bed.

What you shouldn't do on Evdokimov Day

On this day, many people followed certain rules:

  • did not drink alcohol before the upcoming fast;
  • did not indulge in excessive gluttony;
  • They did not refuse help, especially to loved ones.

It was on August 13 that it was considered a grave sin to commit ungodly acts, namely, to quarrel with loved ones. Otherwise, according to beliefs, one could bring bad luck upon oneself.

What can you do on Evdokimov Day?

Today it is recommended to go to the garden and start collecting the ripened harvest.

Then you should start making vegetable, fruit or berry preparations for the winter.

It is also worth treating your closest relatives or friends with turnips.
