Today, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the holy martyr Euplus of Catania.

Among the people, this celebration is called Euplus Day.

In Rus', on this day it was customary to ensure that no one offended the horses and no one harmed them.

Euplus of Catania was born in the Sicilian city of Catana (present-day Catania). He lived during the reign of the pagan emperors Diocletian and Maximilian.

Despite the threat to his life, Eupl decided in his youth to devote his life to the Christian religion. He carried out his Christian service responsibly and was a good preacher.

Euplus later paid for his love for Christ's teaching. In particular, he was seized by the imperial guards during a sermon.

The preacher was brought to the ruler for trial. There he expressed all his hostility to idolatry, which angered the emperor.

For such an act Euplus was sent to prison, where he suffered greatly in the dungeons. In the end, he died, but did not renounce his faith.

What not to do on Eupla Day

On this day, many people followed certain rules:

  • did not overeat or drink alcohol;
  • do not walk alone in unfamiliar places;
