Any pain is a protective reaction of the body and signals us about a problem that is important to pay attention to.
Despite this, many people are still convinced that the pain will stop and they put off visiting a doctor until the last minute.
However, if you endure the pain for too long, irreversible consequences for your health may occur. This was told by the dentist, maxillofacial surgeon, Dmitry Konstantinovich Yudin .
Pain is a reaction of the nervous system to disturbances occurring in the body. It occurs when damaged cells and tissues release special chemicals that form all painful sensations. Pain cannot be simply turned off.
It affects the functioning of all internal organs and systems of the body and causes not only physical discomfort, but also depresses the psycho-emotional state.
Pain can be completely different: headache, back pain, arm pain, facial pain, etc. Each of us has an internal resource that allows us to cope with pain. However, each person has their own pain threshold.
Any pain can become chronic.
Traditional neurology gives a fairly clear answer to the question: what will happen if you endure pain for too long?
If you do not react to the pain for three months, it may become constant, change, intensify with cold, wind, vibration and other standard irritants, cause sleep disturbances, eating disorders or simply become chronic, that is, an independent disease.
Pain always has a root cause, a source, for example, an injury, damage to an organ, be it a tooth that has been bothering you for a long time or, for example, a herniated disc.
And if the pain lasts more than three months, then there is a risk that even when the patient does receive qualified medical care and is relieved of the sources of pain, he will still continue to experience painful, unpleasant sensations, which can also further intensify from common irritants or even against the background of stress.
There are pain memory zones in the brain. That is why we remember the first time we had a bad toothache or the pain we experienced when we broke a bone. And according to the World Health Organization, pain becomes a separate disease if it lasts more than three months. Chronic pain cannot be completely cured.
This applies to any pain, but especially in the facial area. As modern medical science shows, facial pain becomes chronic three times faster.
This means that it only takes one month (sometimes even faster) for this pain to become chronic. Its treatment is always multi-component and complex, often requiring the use of strong drugs, such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants, which require long-term use.
Many of them have side effects that can only be treated by qualified doctors: a neurologist, psychotherapist or even a psychiatrist.
This type of pain is extremely difficult to treat because it requires teamwork of several specialists at once, who must often be in the same clinic at the same appointment. This is necessary in order to assess the scale and development of the disease, motivate the patient and form a sequence of actions that will help solve this problem forever.
What to do if pain occurs
The most important thing to remember is that pain cannot be tolerated. And at the first painful manifestation, you must immediately consult a doctor to identify the cause of the pain and further treatment.
In addition, you cannot self-medicate. Often, a person who suffers from pain begins to take a large number of painkillers, which have certain side effects.
Take care of yourself and be healthy!
