Everyone knows that some foods, including vegetables and fruits, need to be washed before cooking.
However, not everyone knows whether it is necessary to wash meat and eggs before cooking.
Infectious disease specialist and pediatrician at the SM-Clinic, Evgeny Shapovalov, spoke about this, as reported by Doctor Peter .
Should I wash meat?
Some people may wash meat in an attempt to remove various bacteria from it.
But it is noted that it is almost impossible to wash them off food products.
Therefore, the expert advises paying more attention to heat treatment, especially when cooking pork or chicken.
It is also emphasized that during washing, bacteria can get onto other surfaces, including the sink and kitchen utensils.
As a result, there may be a risk of cross-contamination.
In this case, before cooking, the meat can be soaked in water for 15 or 20 minutes. This will allow you to wash off various contaminants and unnecessary particles.
Also, when preparing soups, it would not be a bad idea to wash off the first broth. Afterwards, the meat should be covered with clean water.
Should eggs be washed?
It is advisable to wash eggs before cooking. This should be done with warm water and soap.
But you need to wash them not in advance, but before cooking.
Otherwise, microcracks may appear on the surface of the eggs. And this is fraught with the risk of bacteria getting in.
