Sleep scientists and biologists from Imperial College London have announced that a link has been found between nightmares and an increased risk of developing dementia.

As experts explained, middle-aged people are at a greater risk of suffering from dementia.

The foreign portal MedicalXpress reports with reference to researchers: “Unpleasant dreams are dangerous because they signal problems with the cognitive functions of the human brain.”

Scientists conducted relevant experiments that allowed them to track the relationship between nightmares and the development of dementia.

Results of the experiments

Experts found that subjects who said they did not have disturbing dreams had better cognitive performance.

People who had nightmares at night suffered from a decrease in their thinking abilities.

The difference in brain processes between one group of subjects and the second was four times greater.

In conclusion, the experts emphasized that it is extremely important to seek medical help in a timely manner, especially in cases where nightmares are intense.
