A popular habit in the United States of wearing outdoor shoes around the house may have serious health consequences.
Walking around the house in outdoor shoes can be hazardous to your health due to pathogens.
This was stated in a conversation with Lenta.ru by Maria Zolotareva, senior lecturer at the Department of Biotechnology and Industrial Pharmacy at RTU MIREA.
She explained that microorganisms living on the soles of the feet can penetrate through the skin, mucous membranes or respiratory tract, causing infections.
Streptococci and staphylococci cause skin inflammation, folliculitis and abscesses.
Zolotareva emphasized that Escherichia coli bacteria pose a particular danger.
The biotechnologist reminded that microorganisms get onto the soles with animal waste.
When bare feet come into contact with dirty floors, the risk of infection increases.
Zolotareva urged people with weakened immune systems not to wear outdoor shoes at home.
She also explained that pets can also pick up worm infestations and viral infections from the floor.
For preventive purposes, it is recommended to remove outdoor shoes when entering a building.
