Ophthalmologist warns of subtle warning sign of blindness

Ophthalmologist Dmitry Dementyev listed the signs of retinitis pigmentosa.

Among its symptoms, the doctor identified deterioration of vision in the dark, the appearance of bright flashes or floating objects in the field of vision.

Dementyev, on the air of the program “About the Most Important Thing” on the channel “Russia 1,” recommended that if one of these symptoms appears, one should not delay in visiting a doctor.

According to him, retinitis pigmentosa can be a harbinger of blindness.

This disease affects the photoreceptors that process images.

“In their place, pigment deposits appear, preventing the brain from receiving an image,” Dementyev explained the consequences.

The ophthalmologist stated that this results in blindness, which they do not yet know how to treat.

Symptoms of retinitis pigmentosa

The doctor attributed the following to the symptoms of retinitis pigmentosa:

  • deterioration of vision in the dark, reduction of visual fields, loss and distortion of color perception, decreased visual acuity.

Dementyev warned about the importance of promptly contacting a doctor if one of the above symptoms is present.
