Kefir is a healthy fermented milk product that in most cases can be consumed almost daily.
However, this drink is not always equally useful in the presence of certain contraindications.
Gastroenterologist at the Vidnovskaya Clinical Hospital of the Moscow Region Ministry of Health Lyudmila Sukhorukova gave this warning in an interview with RIA Novosti .
The doctor reminded that fermented milk products are broken down in our body with the help of the enzyme lactase, produced by intestinal cells. And if there is not enough of this enzyme, milk sugar may not be broken down at all.
This results in rumbling in the stomach, bloating and pain.
Therefore, people with lactose intolerance are advised to abstain not only from regular dairy products, but also from fermented milk products, including kefir.
The second reason why problems with the gastrointestinal tract may arise when drinking kefir is an allergy to the milk protein casein. Its characteristic symptoms are intestinal upset and rash.
