The older the currant bushes become, the less fruit they produce.
However, this is not a reason to get rid of the plants.
Together with the expert of the online publication TUT NOVOSTI, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , we figure out what to do with old currant bushes.
Renewal of currant bushes
In fact, even old currant bushes can be “tricked” into bearing fruit.
Rejuvenation of shrubs is carried out in spring and autumn. To do this, you need to carry out the following manipulations:
- remove zero shoots;
- get rid of broken branches;
- cut off annual shoots, leaving only 2-3 of the most developed ones;
- Cut back the ends of the old branches of the bush to the lateral branches.
But you shouldn't get rid of weakly fruitful branches in one fell swoop. Spread this process over 2-3 years.
Such simple manipulations in spring and autumn will help to completely rejuvenate old plants within 3-4 years and once again enjoy a rich harvest.
Earlier we wrote about how to rejuvenate old rose bushes.
