During the flowering period of potatoes, many gardeners and summer residents wonder whether they need to pick them.
It's time to settle this issue once and for all.
Together with the expert of the online publication TUT NOVOSTI, scientist agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , we figure out how appropriate it is to do this during flowering.
To pick flowers or not
Each summer resident decides first of all for himself whether it is worth doing this.
Two facts are known for certain:
- the development of flowers requires the plant's precious resources;
- Any injury caused by pruning has a detrimental effect on the development of the bush.
However, there are good reasons to let the plant take its own course.
During flowering, the plant is tasked with blooming. Therefore, by cutting off some flowers, you force the bush to produce new ones.
Excessive walking around the garden bed compacts the soil, which causes the potatoes to grow worse.
In addition, pathogens can penetrate into the micro-wounds formed after removing flowers.
