Lichen is a symbiosis of fungi and algae that often settles on tree trunks in the garden.
Lichens grow quite slowly, so there is no need to worry that they will suddenly cover the entire tree.
However, it is worth getting rid of this symbiote, and here are a couple of reasons why.
Why is lichen dangerous?
By settling on the trunks of fruit trees, lichen causes the bark underneath to become constantly over-moistened. And such conditions are ideal for mold to appear.
Lichen is also a fertile breeding ground for pests that are dangerous to trees.
How to get rid of lichen
To get rid of lichen, treat the affected bark with antifungal compounds or a solution of wood ash.
To prepare this folk remedy, you will need 10 liters of water, 1 kilogram of salt, 2 pieces of laundry soap, which need to be grated into shavings.
The mixture is brought to a boil, cooled, and then applied to the affected areas.
If the lichens have just appeared, then you can try scraping them off with a knife.
