Carrot thinning is a very labor-intensive and responsible task. It requires not only increased attention, but also the right approach.

The main difficulty of this process is that the smell emitted by the tops attracts the carrot fly, the number one pest for this crop.

It is very important to carry out the work as quickly and carefully as possible so that the insect does not smell the pleasant aroma, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

Experts recommend thinning carrots in two stages. The first is when 3 true leaves appear on the shoots.

It is highly undesirable to skip this step, as the roots may begin to get tangled up with each other, which will complicate their further removal.

It is better to carry out the procedure early in the morning or on a cool day. To easily extract the sprouts, the soil must be well moistened and allowed to soak a little.

After thinning, you need to water the beds again. The water will compact the soil and serve as a barrier for essential oils.

After watering, the soil should be thoroughly mulched and sprinkled with crushed tobacco leaves or hot pepper.

The second thinning should be done when the plants grow to 10-15 cm. Moreover, you need to pull out those shoots that are larger. The sequence of actions is the same.
