Apple trees are fairly unpretentious trees.
However, if you want to get a bountiful harvest next year, you need to perform several manipulations.
We tell you what care fruit trees need before the onset of cold weather.
Firstly, fruit trees need abundant watering until mid-October. Deep watering delivers nutrients to the roots deep down, and they are the least susceptible to freezing.
Secondly, do not fertilize the trees before the dormant period. If you continue to apply nutrients, the apple trees will continue to grow even when they are supposed to go dormant.
Thirdly, the apple tree needs to be mulched with the right materials. The best is a mixture of straw or hardwood sprinkled with gravel: such mulch will safely cover the tree's roots until spring.
Fourthly, after the leaves have fallen, the tree must be protected from pests. Wire fencing will help against mice and hares, and adhesive tapes and barrier tapes will prevent winter moth larvae from infecting the tree.
