Experienced gardeners plant garlic in the same place only two years in a row.

If you break this rule, then all subsequent years the harvest will be affected by nematodes. And this, in turn, will contribute to the accumulation of harmful substances in the soil and as a result may negatively affect the cultivation of other crops.

However, you cannot alternate garlic with onions: these plants belong to the same family, and therefore suffer from the same pests and diseases.
