Sometimes summer residents and gardeners encounter such a phenomenon as holes in tomato fruits.

Most often this happens due to certain types of pests that settle on plants.

Together with the expert of the online publication TUT NOVOSTI, scientist agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, we figure out what the reason is.

Tomato Pests

The first thing to do is to break the fruit. If a caterpillar is found inside, it means that the tomato leaf miner or cotton bollworm has settled on the plants.

The first insect is characterized by irregularly shaped spots that appear on the leaves of plants. Because of them, the pest got its name.

In order to avoid the appearance of the pest, it is recommended to disinfect the soil using potassium permanganate or special preparations, as well as create traps coated with glue.

The cotton bollworm uses weeds as a food source, such as quinoa, henbane, and others. Therefore, to prevent its appearance, you should weed the beds in a timely manner.

Installing transoms with fine mesh will also help if the plants are growing in a greenhouse. This will prevent adult butterflies from getting inside and laying eggs.
