After completing the main work on the site, it is time to think about protecting plants for the winter.
And while with most plants there is no question about whether they need to be mulched, in the case of a garden many people are at a loss.
Let's figure out whether trees need mulch.
Mulch tasks
Let's start with the fact that mulching performs important tasks in the garden:
- retaining moisture in the soil;
- protection of roots from hypothermia and damping off;
- protection of soil from compaction, erosion and washout.
Winter mulch has another key function. When the first spring sun begins to shine, it helps to keep the soil frozen for longer so that plants do not experience temperature fluctuations.
What to use as mulch
Suitable mulch for trees and shrubs:
- straw;
- fallen leaves;
- needles;
- compost;
- peat;
- wood sawdust.
Please note: Winter mulch is attractive to rodents, so it is important to add repellents and pest repellents to it to prevent it from becoming an additional threat to your garden.
