Alkaline soil in the garden: how to identify and how to acidify

07.05.2024 04:10

Alkaline soil can be a serious hindrance to the successful growth of plants in the garden.

Therefore, it is important to know how to determine soil pH and how to acidify it to provide optimal conditions for crop growth and development.

First, it is worth conducting a soil acidity test using a special device or test kit, which can be purchased at gardening stores, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

Measuring the pH of your soil will tell you how alkaline it is. Generally, a pH of 6 to 7 is considered optimal for most vegetables and flowers.

If the test shows that the soil is too alkaline, it can be acidified using various materials such as peat, compost or humus.

These materials will help lower the pH of the soil and create more favorable conditions for plant growth.

You can also use special chemical soil acidifiers, such as ammonium sulfate or elemental sulfur. However, before using them, you should definitely consult a specialist to avoid possible negative consequences for the soil and plants.

Remember that proper soil pH and acidification are key to successful gardening.
