Fertilizing gooseberries in September is a must-do task that needs to be completed before the cold weather sets in.
Over the summer, the plants have depleted their supply of nutrients and need to restore them in order to actively bear fruit again next year.
Expert of the online publication TUT NOVOSTI, agronomist Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to feed gooseberries in the fall.
Superphosphate is considered a simple and universal option in this case.
The fertilizer is scattered and embedded into the soil to a depth of 10 cm. But it is distributed evenly around the bush and when loosening it is important not to damage the roots.
Scatter 1 or 2 tablespoons of superphosphate.
What is the benefit? This fertilizer allows plantings to better fight fungal diseases and resist frost.
In the spring, the bushes will not waste time and energy on restoration.
In addition, if the fertilizer is applied correctly, the gooseberry uses water more economically and accumulates more sugar in the berries.
Note
Wood ash can be added as a potassium fertilizer. It is not necessary to do this every year. You can pour out a liter jar of ash once every 3-4 years and distribute it around the plant.
