The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia explained why Russia suspended social payments to some categories of residents of the republic.
Sergei Shamba reported that Moscow made this decision because the country failed to fulfill a number of obligations.
Financing will continue if Abkhazia fulfills a number of conditions, RBC reports.
Thus, Sukhum must ratify the agreement on the recognition and enforcement of judicial and arbitration decisions in economic cases.
In addition, Russian legal entities must obtain permission to implement investment projects.
Moscow also expects Abkhazia to lift restrictions on Russian investors related to activities in the commercial real estate market.
Russia also wants the republic’s authorities to pass on information about the country’s deputies and opposition leaders who are working “to the detriment of the interests of the Russian Federation and the development of Russian-Abkhaz relations.”
The suspension of social payments is not the only measure. Russia may begin supplying electricity to Abkhazia on a commercial basis as early as autumn 2024.
Russia and Abkhazia have been cooperating for a long time in various fields. For tourists from the Russian Federation, this country is one of the favorite destinations.
