Russia may tighten measures against those who publicly insult government officials on the Internet or in the media.
These actions can result in imprisonment for up to two years.
The corresponding bill to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation received support from the government, TASS writes.
The document introduces amendments to Article 319 of the Criminal Code, which concerns liability for publicly insulting a government official in the performance of his duties.
According to the draft law, violators face:
- fine up to 80 thousand rubles;
- compulsory work up to 460 hours;
- correctional labor for up to two years.
Stricter measures may be introduced for public insults to the authorities on the Internet or in the media:
- up to 1 million rubles, deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for up to three years.
Violators may be sentenced to compulsory work for up to 480 hours, or forced labor for up to 2 years.
The bill also provides for imprisonment for up to 2 years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for up to 3 years.
