US banks block Russian clients' accounts when they try to access their online accounts from Russia.

American banks may block the accounts of some clients if they want to use their services from Russia.

Banks identify Russian clients by their Russian IP address, lawyers told RBK .

These cases are recorded even in the absence of territorial sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Experts say they have seen an increase in such cases since late last year.

US banks are overly compliant with sanctions, lawyers say.

In the United States, they prefer to identify individuals in Russia not by reference to citizenship, but in most cases by reference to location.

According to experts, none of the clients challenged this US decision.

The US Office of Foreign Assets Control advises banks to freeze customer accounts when they make payments from a sanctioned territory.

Russia is not among these territories.

However, US banks are blocking accounts based on their assessment of the Russian Federation as a country with increased sanctions and other risks.
