The head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty, Ralf Niemeyer, commented on Merkel’s words about the benefits of gas supplies from Russia.

He noted that the former chancellor was probably testing public opinion in this way.

Angela Merkel's statement was a test of public opinion, the RIA Novosti article emphasizes.

Niemeyer thus responded to Merkel’s words that the long-term gas supplies from Russia to Germany were not a mistake.

The former chancellor may well have been assessing public opinion on the possibility of resuming gas supplies under a future government involving the CDU.

Merkel also emphasized that the supply of Russian gas to Germany has become a long-standing tradition.

She does not consider it a mistake that Germany at one time received Russian gas at a good price.
