Doctor reveals what diet will help maintain kidney health

The head of the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education of the Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University revealed which diet helps not only to lose weight.

The specialist advised people who do not want to have kidney problems to adhere to the principles of the Mediterranean diet.

This is the advice given by nephrologist Ashot Yesayan to subscribers of the News.ru portal.

According to the expert, three factors contribute to the preservation of kidney function:

  • Mediterranean diet;
  • physical activity;
  • quality water.

Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet

The basis of the Mediterranean diet is fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, seafood. The main thing is that they do not contain additives: it is recommended to eat only organic products.

This diet is gentle on the body, since you don’t have to count calories or go hungry.

People who follow a Mediterranean diet have an 18-20% reduced risk of kidney disease, while excess salt in the diet and smoking, on the contrary, increase this risk.
