In general, this is not news for the residents of our country.
But if you are used to escaping from a hangover with brine or borscht, and you are terribly tired of them, and you are looking for something, try a new remedy: Korean soup Yakamein.
According to legend, the soup, which relieves nausea, headaches and unsightly tremors, was first tried by American soldiers from New Orleans.
In the fifties of the last century, they brought order to Korea and, of course, since there was not much entertainment there, they heavily relied on alcohol.
The morning after such libations was usually not good; it was painful for the Koreans to look at the Americans, so they supplied them with “yakamein” on an industrial scale.
So, having restored order in a foreign country, American soldiers, as usual, not only brought home some of its traditions, but also a recipe for hangover soup.
However, there is a second legend, according to which the soup is considered not Korean at all, but Chinese, and it came to the States in the early 1800s, along with the Chinese who built railroads and worked with African slaves on sugar plantations, and then settled in America.
What's in the soup
Since, as you understand, we can’t do anything without scientists today, and experiments are in their blood, they couldn’t pass by cooking - an area that would seem to have nothing to do with panaceas for cancer and AIDS, or with popular studies of human brain activity.
The same New Orleans is to blame, where the tradition of escaping a hangover with “yakamein” is preserved and passed down to descendants.
So, American scientists analyzed the composition of the soup, which includes noodles, meat (chicken or beef) or shrimp, green onions, hard-boiled eggs, and soy sauce, and came to the conclusion that Yakamein easily calms the metabolic storm that occurs in the body right after immoderate libations.
You can also look at it scientifically: when alcohol is broken down in the body, dehydration occurs, and other negative effects appear, in particular, the liver produces the toxic substance acetaldehyde.
And all the symptoms of a hangover that we are familiar with - tremors, sweating, rapid pulse, high blood pressure, muscle pain, thirst, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to bright light and even anxiety and depression - are a consequence of the production of this toxin.
Various additives present in alcohol - for color and taste (for example, in whiskey/bourbon) - “help” to worsen the situation, that is, the hangover.
So what is the power of soup? Of course, in the products! Eggs contain a substance called cysteine, which helps remove acetaldehyde from the body. Salty soy sauce helps avoid dehydration, it works like sodium, potassium and other salts, which are intensively removed from the body of a person who has had too much with sweat and urine.
Vitamin B1, which is present in meat, helps prevent the build-up of glutarate, a substance that scientists believe causes hangover headaches.
Impressive. And, although you can still use the good old hangover cure tips, the main one being "to avoid this kind of suffering, you have to stop drinking," take a pen and write down the recipe, in case it comes in handy.
Well, if this is impossible and you can’t not drink, then at least eat something fatty before drinking, drink water between shots, and don’t drink coffee afterwards, as this invigorating drink will only worsen the dehydration caused by alcohol.
Yakamein Soup Recipe
The weight of the ingredients does not matter. You will eat as much as you cook. You need to cook meat broth (beef, chicken) or, if you do not eat meat, you can boil shrimp.
Cook the meat for at least 2 hours. Then remove it from the broth, chop finely, and return it. Boil several hard-boiled eggs and, having chopped them or simply cut them in half, also add them to the broth.
Then chop the green onions and add them to the soup along with soy sauce, pepper, and seasonings to taste.
Yakamein is eaten like this: pre-boiled noodles or spaghetti are placed on the bottom of a deep bowl, broth with all the valuable ingredients is poured in and enjoy. Enjoy!
