How to Separate the Kitchen from the Living Room: Designer Tips

Many people like the so-called American kitchen, where the kitchen and living room are combined. But you never know how it will turn out.

For example, you may not have enough time to clean the kitchen because you have to work a lot. Others value privacy and do not like such solutions.

Do you really want to hear the sound of the dishwasher while you relax in your favorite chair? Or, on the contrary, do you want to cook quietly without being distracted by the TV, says Yulia Tychino .

The use of space depends largely on lifestyle (occupation, keeping pets, etc.).

In some cases, it may be enough to visually separate the kitchen and living room, but in other situations, a more radical solution is required. Let's find out what options there are for choosing separate living rooms and kitchens!

How to visually separate the living room from the kitchen

Visually separating two spaces means creating some areas with creative design elements rather than plasterboard walls.

True, these techniques do not prevent the smell of food from penetrating into the living room, but they help to create a harmonious design. What solutions exist:

  • A system of open shelves on which you can place flowers or other decorations.
  • Different colors in the kitchen and living room.
  • Various colors and finishes (stickers, paintings, decor, moldings) on the living room ceiling.

An example of a successful solution

The living room's conversation area is separated by a rug, with enough room for armchairs, a coffee table and a sofa.

The curtain or drapery is sheer (if you don't want to block out the light) or opaque or patterned, depending on what works best with the design.

The sofa stands with its back to the kitchen and creates a kind of divider between the spaces.

How to physically separate the living room from the kitchen

There are 3 options:

  • Sliding door (takes up less space than a regular door) This is the perfect solution if you want to completely separate the living room and kitchen, although the room will not be as bright.
  • Glass wall with glass door – this is how light passes through and you can decorate the glass with various decorations. The decoration can be changed from time to time, this way you can diversify the interior.
  • Partial partition made of plasterboard – this solution is somewhere in the middle between a full partition and an American kitchen, as it only partially closes off the kitchen. However, it allows for sufficient free movement between the rooms.

There are various solutions, but the most important thing is to divide the rooms according to your needs and tastes.
