Wallpaper has been considered the most popular finishing material for many years.
They are presented on the market in a wide range of colors and prices.
And what parameters you should pay attention to when choosing them, you will now find out, says Yulia Tychino .
Types of wallpaper
• Paper. A budget option that has several significant drawbacks: they fade in the sun, they tear when wet, if the surface has defects (cracks, depressions), then it must be leveled, otherwise the flaws will be visible.
• Non-woven and vinyl. The most popular option. They are not afraid of temperature changes, they can be wiped, and some of their varieties can be repeatedly repainted with latex and acrylic paints. They will cost more than paper ones.
• Metallic wallpaper. They will look perfect in an apartment decorated in a minimalist or high-tech style. Their main feature is a shiny surface, which helps to visually increase the space.
• Cork wallpaper. They have excellent noise and heat insulation qualities, and are also pleasant to the touch. Their only drawback is the high price.
• Fabric wallpaper. They are not only beautiful, but also pleasant to the touch. Silk, polyester, jute, felt, linen and velour are used as a decorative outer layer. But they have one feature.
Despite the fact that they have a dust-repellent surface, they need to be cleaned. But only dry cleaning is allowed, since they do not tolerate wet cleaning.
If the room faces the sunny side, then it is best to choose linen wallpaper on a paper base for its decoration, as they are more resistant to ultraviolet rays.
If there are defects on the walls, then it is advisable to choose jute wallpaper for their decoration, since due to their density they mask the flaws well.
• Liquid wallpaper is a kind of compromise between painting and wallpaper. With their help, you can hide minor flaws. But to work with this material, you need skills.
• Glass fiber wallpaper. They have excellent strength, water resistance, and most importantly, they are durable, as they can be repainted up to 20 times.
• Bamboo wallpaper is considered environmentally friendly. In its characteristics, it is similar to cork wallpaper - it also has good noise-proofing and heat-insulating properties.
To clean them, you just need to vacuum them. If the dirt is strong, then you can wipe them with a damp sponge. Their only disadvantage is the high price, like cork wallpaper.
Universal rules for choosing wallpaper
• For small living rooms, it is recommended to choose wallpaper in light or pastel colors without large and bright patterns.
• For well-lit rooms, choose wallpaper in cool tones (turquoise, blue or purple).
If there is little sunlight in the living room, for example, the windows face the north side or the window is darkened by trees, then choose warm-toned wallpaper (orange, sand, gold).
Choosing wallpaper according to interior style
• Cork and bamboo wallpapers will fit perfectly into rooms decorated in Japanese, country and eco styles.
• Metallic wallpaper is suitable for minimalist and high-tech styles.
• Fabric wallpaper is suitable for interiors decorated in English, classical, or Provence styles.
