Is it difficult to walk your dog?
She doesn't listen, pulls on the leash and tries to run away? You'll have to contact a dog trainer with this problem.
First, we need to understand why this is happening. There are several possible reasons.
1. You don't pay attention to the animal. You walk, staring at your phone or listening to music on your headphones. The pet doesn't receive contact from you and also stops paying attention to you. In addition, the pet may get bored. You need to walk the dog actively - communicate with it, play.
2. You always give in to the dog. Wherever it pulls you, you turn after it. Good things are quickly acquired, and soon the dog is pulling you along despite your resistance.
3. You use a retractable leash. Cynologists claim that this has a negative effect on the pet's behavior. After all, the retractable leash is designed in such a way that the leash is constantly taut. And this tension is certainly felt by the animal and makes it anxious.
Why this problem needs to be solved
First of all, it is not safe. If the dog pulls on the leash and tries to run away, it can lead to a dangerous situation.
1. For example, an animal gets off its leash and ends up on the road, where it could get hit by a car.
2. The dog may strain its legs too much and injure its neck.
3. It is also unsafe for the owner. It has happened that the dog jerks the leash sharply, and the owner stumbles and falls, injuring himself.
How to wean a dog from a bad habit
Buy a regular leash with a fixed length. If you have a dog for a short time, a length of 3 m will do. Experienced dog owners use a leash up to 5 m.
Encourage the dog when it walks next to you, praise it and talk to it. As soon as it starts to pull, shut up. Then it develops a connection: it walks next to you – you communicate, it pulls – it loses contact with you.
Stop at any attempt to pull the leash. And stay in place until the animal stops and returns. Returns - actively knock it down and treat it with its favorite treat.
If the dog continues to pull, do not give in and do not go where it wants.
Lead her, no matter what she does. If your pet whines anxiously, chews on the leash, distract her. For example, lure her with a treat, but do not give it to her under any circumstances.
Otherwise, the dog will form the wrong connection: chews the leash - gets a treat. Let it walk a dozen steps with you and only then get a treat.
