Why do cats, despite not perceiving the sweet taste, still seek out and eat sweets?

Cats' diets are largely meat-based, and so they have become less sensitive to sweet tastes.

Their taste buds are not designed for sweetness, so they cannot taste sweetness the way humans normally do.

However, there are several reasons why furry creatures may react and seek out treats.

Curiosity

Cats are naturally curious and enjoy exploring sweet foods. They may do this if they see that their household members are frequently eating sweets.

Texture and smell

The cat may also be attracted to the texture and smell of sweet food. It will eat sweets to compare its usual food with the new treat.

Supplements

Some dry cat foods and treats may contain added sugar or sweeteners that may entice cats to eat.

Although cats are unable to taste sweetness, their curiosity and interest in smells may cause them to seek out sweet foods.
