When and How to Dress Your Dog for a Walk: Veterinarian's Advice

07.01.2024 06:10

Dogs are man's faithful friends who need care and attention. Especially in the cold season, when the air temperature drops below zero.

Not all dogs can handle the cold well, so it is important to know when and how to dress them for a walk.

How to Tell if Your Dog Needs Clothes

Not all dogs need clothes, some breeds have thick and warm enough fur that protects them from the cold.

Such breeds include, for example, huskies, Siberian huskies and others. They can walk without clothes at temperatures down to -40 degrees.

However, there are also breeds that are very sensitive to cold and can freeze even at slightly below zero temperatures.

These include, for example, dachshunds, chihuahuas, poodles, Yorkies, pugs. They need clothing at temperatures below +5 degrees.

In addition, clothing may be needed for dogs that suffer from chronic diseases, have problems with immunity, joints or skin, as well as puppies and older dogs.

To determine whether a dog needs clothes, you can pay attention to its behavior and condition.

If your dog is shivering, whining, wants to go home, or if its paws, ears, tail or nose are cold to the touch, it means it is cold and needs to be dressed.

How to Choose and Put on Clothes for Your Dog

Dog clothes should be comfortable, warm, waterproof and not restrict movement. They should fit the dog's body well, but not be too tight. They should protect the dog's chest, stomach, back and neck, and the clothes should not interfere with its walking, running, sitting and lying down.

Clothes for dogs can be different: overalls, coats, sweaters, vests, jackets and others.

Depending on the air temperature and the individual characteristics of the dog, you can choose warmer or lighter clothing. You can also use additional accessories such as hats, scarves, boots or socks.

Dog clothes should be put on before going outside and taken off after returning home.

Avoid leaving your dog indoors with clothing on as this may cause overheating, hair loss or skin irritation.
