Bacteria and yeast love to live in the dark, moist environment of dogs' eyes.
Water in the ears caused by swimming or bathing can develop into an ear infection, so it is important to rinse out the water and dry your dog's ears promptly.
What you need to prepare is cleaning and drying solutions, soft towels and cotton swabs.
Commercial ear cleaners contain desiccants such as witch hazel. These solutions can help evaporate water and prevent infection.
Another option is to use homemade recipes. Animal experts recommend mixing hydrogen peroxide, witch hazel, or apple cider vinegar with equal parts purified water. But alcohol is not recommended because it can cause burns and irritation.
1. Gently dry your dog's ears with a soft towel. If the ears are hanging, lift them up and pat dry.
2. Place a few drops of ear solution into the first ear canal. If you are using a homemade formula, you can use a clean medicine dropper to place the solution into your ears. Remember not to force the tip of the bottle or dropper into your ear canal.
3. Massage the ear root for 1-2 minutes to distribute the solution throughout the ear canal.
4. Have your dog shake his head. The force of the vibration may dislodge any debris that may be lodged in the ear.
5. Wipe the inside of your dog's ear with a cotton swab to remove excess fluid, pus, and debris. This process may require several cotton swabs.
6. Repeat this process for the second ear.
7. Before bathing your dog, place cotton wool in each dog's ear to reduce the amount of water entering the ear.
