In Russia, fines for unsanitary conditions in Russian apartments may increase.

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Construction and Housing and Public Utilities Sergei Kolunov has put forward an initiative to increase fines for unsanitary conditions in apartments.

He also called for the return of the norm that allows for the forced confiscation of housing from citizens who do not comply with sanitary standards, the RIA Novosti article emphasizes.

According to Kolunov, some homeowners do not monitor the sanitary conditions of their apartments, turning their homes into dumps.

He initiated increasing fines and adding to the list of conditions that fall under unsanitary conditions.

Kolunov emphasizes that Russians who begin to pay for unsanitary conditions will probably begin to respect the interests of their neighbors.

The parliamentarian noted that unpleasant odors from such apartments spread to the stairwells and penetrate into neighboring apartments.

People suffering from unsanitary conditions are forced to seek help from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Rospotrebnadzor.

Today, fines under Article 6.4 of the Code of Administrative Offences amount to only 500-1000 roubles, and they are not applied often.

Neighbors have to endure unsanitary conditions and breathe in unpleasant odors for years.

The deputy called for changes to legislation to protect the rights of conscientious citizens.
