The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned about the revival of the criminal scheme “Mammoth”, which is gaining popularity among fraudsters.

The scheme gets its name from the slang used by criminals to refer to their victims.

The message on the Ministry of Internal Affairs Telegram channel notes that this phishing scheme was recorded back in the summer of 2019 and has regained popularity.

The essence of the fraud is that the attackers try to steal money and bank card data under the pretext of a fake purchase of goods on the Internet.

Unlike previous schemes, now scammers offer to install a mobile application for a supposedly secure transaction.

However, this application hides a spy program. It is capable of intercepting bank card data and SMS codes.

In this way, the attackers manage to steal money from the victims’ bank accounts.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasizes that this scheme is being activated in the run-up to the New Year holidays, when people make mass purchases on marketplaces.
