An expert shared information with Russians about how people become infected with West Nile fever.
The main carriers of the disease are mosquitoes belonging to the genus Culex.
Epidemiologist Natalya Pshenichnaya shared these observations with RIA Novosti journalists.
As the expert noted, it is not only mosquitoes of the above-mentioned genus that pose a danger. West Nile fever can also be spread by waterfowl.
At the same time, mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles are also carriers of the disease. However, these insects, unlike Culex, rarely attack humans, preferring to feed on the blood of insects.
The expert also spoke about other ways of transmitting the virus. The disease is not transmitted from an infected person to a healthy one.
The only exceptions are cases where the child became ill in the womb or the virus was detected in the recipient’s body after the transplant.
In total, 14 cases of West Nile fever have been registered in Russia to date.
