The Presidium of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to review the case of Kaliningrad doctors Elina Sushkevich and Elena Belaya.
They are accused of killing a premature baby.
In November 2018, a child with low birth weight was born in Kaliningrad, writes RBC .
The investigation claims that deputy chief physician Elena Belaya decided that the child would die and that this would worsen the hospital's statistics.
She instructed the anesthesiologist Elina Sushkevich to inject the child with magnesium sulfate, which led to his death.
In 2020, a Kaliningrad court acquitted the doctors. However, the prosecutor's office appealed this decision.
In 2022, the Moscow Regional Court found the doctors guilty. They were sentenced to 9 and 9.5 years in prison.
The doctors did not admit their guilt. They claimed that the child died of natural causes.
The doctors' defense appealed the decision first to the Supreme Court and to the Presidium of the Supreme Court.
As a result, the Presidium of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to review the case due to possible errors in previous trials.
